In order to maintain high standards and exemplary performance, all members of the Dewey Beach Patrol must undergo rigorous physical training and educational coursework. The DBP is nationally accredited by the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) to certify its members in open water rescue. Each guard is certified as: (1) an Emergency First Responder by the Delaware State Fire School, (2) as a Health Care Provider by the American Heart Association; and (3) as an open water rescue lifeguard through the USLA (Appendix A). First year lifeguards are required to complete a minimum of twenty-one (21) days of rookie training that includes intense physical conditioning and the completion of the annual rookie test. In addition, the DBP is a standing member of the Sussex County Lifesaving Association (SCLA). All lifeguards must continuously complete routine training in CPR, standard first aid and c-spine injury stabilization.
The DBP safeguards Dewey Beach on a daily basis from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Operational duties begin at 9:00 AM for roll call, briefing and training. The lifeguards sign on at 10:00am sharp, clear the water at 4:57pm and sign off at 5:00pm unless an active response is in progress.
Your donations help to offset costs associated with Beach Patrol expenses, including the purchase and maintenance of essential life-saving equipment and supplies.
The Dewey Beach Police Department currently has 8 full time sworn officers, 3 part time sworn officers, and 3 support staff. The agency handles approximately 2,586 calls for service each year across an area of 21 blocks long by 2 blocks wide. While many expenses for the department are covered by town and state budgets, investing in the police force improves public safety and officer readiness. Your donations allow us to provide necessary equipment and maintenance, as well as additional training opportunities for our officers, such as our new K9 Unit.
If you've visited Dewey Beach recently, you've likely seen our Dog Ambassadors around town! Dewey is famous for being one of the most dog-friendly beaches on the east coast. We allow dogs and their owners to enjoy our beaches year round! Our Dog Ambassadors are responsible for educating the public about the rules regarding dogs on the beach, and also distributing town dog licenses, mandatory for every dog that visits our area. Of course, our ambassadors are dog lovers, and keep a full stock of treats on hand to share with our canine visitors! Donations to the Dog Ambassador program help us to provide training, equipment, and necessary materials to our staff.
We greatly appreciate any general donations that visitors or property owners would like to make to the town. These donations are used for a variety of needs, including but not limited to beautification, such as planting trees, flowers, and maintenance of the landscape, enhanced signage for public safety and information, bicycle racks, beach wheelchairs, and benches.
