The Dewey Beach Civic League proudly invites you to participate in a special event on the history of our town. Hold the date and get your reservations early.

The first session will address Dewey in the early years through 1962. We will have another session to be scheduled later in spring or in fall, focusing on 1962 to the present. Our official Dewey Beach historian will kick things off and then open it for memories from the audience.

Bring any old photos and or memorabilia you would like to share with the audience. This has a dual purpose. First it will be fun to hear everyone’s stories, but any photographs that can be reproduced will help us develop a special display at the new town hall.

Learn:

  • When and why Rehoboth voters rejected annexation of Dewey.
  • How the Lions Club got free land that generates $100,000/year in rent
  • How city water and sewer changed the landscape
  • Circuit Court judge buys Dewey plot for $39 and is mocked for owning swampland
  • Dewey is the youngest of Delaware’s 57 municipalities. The smallest is Hartly at 36 acres. Dewey has about 211 acres. Central Park is four times as large as Dewey
  • Silver Lake was such a mass of mosquitoes that to walk to Rehoboth people would wrap newspapers around their exposed arms and legs.
  • The town is not named after one of Donald Duck’s nephews.
  • The Bottle & Cork was established in 1938. In its 87-year history no one has been able to keep the men’s room from flooding.

You never know what might come up at these events, so don’t miss it. If you’d like to attend, please email Diane Hanson at hanson@team-doctor.com and let her know if you’d like to share a story from the past. We look forward to seeing you there and hearing about all your memories.
