Job Description:

The Town of Dewey Beach Police Department is seeking motivated and reliable individuals to serve as Seasonal Police Call Takers for the upcoming summer season. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in a fast-paced public safety communications center, with the potential to transition into a Dispatcher (Communications Operator) role.

Our communications center operates 24/7 as the critical link between the public and first responders, handling both emergency and non-emergency calls and coordinating police response throughout the town.

Seasonal Call Takers are responsible for answering incoming calls, gathering critical information, and assisting dispatch personnel in delivering timely and accurate service to the public. This is a 40-hour per week position during the summer season, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Key Responsibilities

· Answer incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for service

· Obtain and document accurate information from callers

· Prioritize calls and relay information to dispatch personnel

· Assist with radio monitoring and basic communications support

· Maintain composure while communicating with distressed or emotional callers

· Utilize computer systems, CAD, and phone systems effectively

· Provide excellent customer service to residents and visitors

(These duties reflect the core function of dispatch environments, where personnel receive calls, relay information, and coordinate response resources.)

Minimum Qualifications

· High school diploma or equivalent

· Strong communication and multitasking skills

· Ability to remain calm under pressure

· Basic computer proficiency

· Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays

· Ability to type 45wpm

Preferred Qualifications

· Prior call center, public safety, or customer service experience is preferred

· Interest in a career in emergency communications or law enforcement

· Familiarity with the local area is a plus

Work Environment

This position operates in a high-volume communications center supporting police operations in a busy summer resort community. Employees must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
