Town Trash Service

We've received a number of calls regarding town trash service. Casella has done a review of all properties and accounts in town to ensure all properties are billed for service, and charged correctly. If you believe there is an error on your trash bill, please reach out to Casella first at (302) 934-1364. If you still have questions, you're welcome to contact us. Below are some of the most frequent questions:

Why did my monthly bill increase from $27.37 to $31.91?

We are now in "in-season" pricing, which runs May 1 - October 1 and costs property owners $31.91 a month for trash collection twice per week, and recycling collection once per week. "Out of season" pricing is $27.37, runs October 2 - April 30, and includes trash collection once per week, and recycling collection every other week. If you rent your property, you will have an additional valet fee of $11.06 out of season, and $16.60 in season.

Why am I just getting a bill for the first time?

This could be for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Your property was previously missed during the last account review, resulting in you not receiving a bill.
  • You never established an account with the trash provider, even though the town is under a single-source contract with Casella. The trash company's latest account review may have added your property, even if you were still using another vendor.
  • You live in a condo building, mixed use, or multi-family structure. These locations may use dumpsters instead of individual cans, and you may have been billed in error. If your trash bill is typically covered with your HOA or condo fees, contact your association for clarification on your trash collection and billing process.

What is single-source? Why can't I get trash service with another company?

The Town of Dewey Beach went to a single-source trash vendor in 2016. Before this, property owners could choose any provider, which caused a number of issues:

  • Trash trucks drove through town constantly, operating on their own schedules. This resulted in excessive noise and traffic congestion.
  • There was no oversight for rental properties. Trash would pile up and overflow cans that were never brought to the curb for disposal.
  • The excessive amount of trucks caused damage to our streets. If a trash truck was leaking or dropping trash, it was difficult to discern which company was causing the issue.

To combat these problems, the Town Council created a committee to investigate a solution. After working on the problem for a year, the decision was made to go with a single source vendor for residential trash. Also, rental properties would be responsible for securing valet service to ensure their trash was picked up.

Additionally...

Town staff and Town Council completed a thorough review of our trash service over the fall of 2024. We briefed the public through our town newsletter, requested feedback through a trash service poll, and the matter was openly discussed at numerous Town Council meetings. In December of 2024, the Town Council voted to extend our contract with Casella, as the vast majority of residents were satisfied with their existing service. You can view that Resolution and Contract here. We do our best to keep all property owners up-to-date with what is happening in town. The Town Council meets every month, typically on the third Friday of the month at 3:00pm. You're encouraged to review the Meeting Calendar on the homepage of townofdeweybeach.gov to see what is on the agenda (agendas are posted at least 7 days in advance of a meeting). If you still have questions, please reach out. We're happy to help!
