Ocean Access Closed

Thursday, August 21st, 9:30am

Ocean access is closed due to effects of Hurricane Erin. Visitors may access the beach, but do not enter the water. Lifeguards are parked in vehicles at dune crossings to monitor the beach. The tide is expected to remain low through the afternoon, but high winds are imminent. The Beach Patrol may close the beach if conditions worsen.

Wednesday, August 20th, 9:34am

Ocean access is open at this time. Swimmers are advised to enter to knee depth. Experienced surfers and boogie boarders may proceed beyond. We expect to see effects of Hurricane Erin beginning today and continuing tomorrow. This storm will remain offshore but will cause high winds, flooding and dangerous surf. Ocean access status may change at any time. The Dewey Beach Patrol continues to monitor ocean conditions and will close ocean access immediately if necessary.

Tuesday, August 19th, 10:46am

Ocean access remains closed here in Dewey Beach. Our lifeguards are standing watch in their vehicles at the dune crossings. The beach is still open, but do not enter the water. The tide is low, but will rise throughout the afternoon, with high tide around 5:00pm. Use caution when accessing the beach during high tide.

Monday, August 18th, 12:42pm

Ocean access is closed in Dewey Beach due to dangerous waves and riptides. Wind speeds have tripled since 9:00am this morning, prompting the Dewey Beach Patrol to restrict access to the ocean. At this time, the beach remains open, but do not enter the water. The next high tide is scheduled for 3:24pm. We expect much higher tide due to wind. We will continue to update the public on beach and ocean conditions.
