Dewey Beach, DE – August 28, 2025 - The Dewey Beach Patrol is proud to announce that Senior Lieutenant Liam Zolper, a 9-year veteran of the Patrol, has been named 2025 Lifeguard of the Year. Elected by his peers, Zolper earned the honor for his exceptional service, leadership, and lifesaving efforts throughout the season.
During his tenure, Zolper has played a vital role in safeguarding Dewey Beach. He has been directly responsible for multiple emergency medical responses and open-water rescues that have resulted in saving lives and preventing serious injury. In addition to his duties as a Senior Lieutenant, Zolper serves as the Junior Lifeguard Program Coordinator, mentoring the next generation of Dewey Beach lifeguards.
A graduate of Cape Henlopen High School and Lynchburg University, Zolper works as a physical education teacher during the offseason. His dedication both on and off the beach has earned him the respect of his colleagues, who cited his exemplary leadership as a key reason for his selection.
The Patrol also recognized Chris Conaway, a 7-year veteran lifeguard, for his outstanding performance as an open-water rescue professional. A graduate of Sussex Central High School and the University of Delaware, Conaway has served as a role model for younger staff members while performing several significant rescues in recent seasons.
“Both Liam and Chris embody the courage, skill, and teamwork that define the Dewey Beach Patrol,” said Bill Zolper, Town Manager. “Their dedication to the safety of our beachgoers and their commitment to excellence inspire the entire staff.”
The Town of Dewey Beach extends its congratulations and appreciation to these outstanding members for their service and commitment to protecting the community.
