Safety Tips
Here in Dewey Beach, we pride ourselves on maintaining a safe environment for everyone to have fun. Additionally, safety is a shared responsibility, and we strive to keep newcomers informed about what to expect here in town. One of the biggest challenges in our area is maintaining pedestrian safety.
DEWEY'S LOCATION
The major thruway for the Delaware beaches is Route 1, otherwise known as Coastal Highway. Unlike nearby beach towns that each have a "downtown" area tucked away from the major roadway, Coastal Highway runs directly through the entirety of Dewey Beach. In addition, our town is small and narrow, lined with commercial businesses on either side of the highway, making it a very "walkable" town. This means that Dewey's vehicle, and pedestrian traffic, are both very heavy during the summer season.
TACKLING THE CHALLENGE
Keeping traffic flowing while also protecting pedestrians is a balancing act, and this job is managed by both the town, as well as the Delaware Department of Transportation. Safety studies and improvements are continuous, and we've seen a number of changes over the years to help improve pedestrian safety:
- Speed limit through town reduced to 25mph
- Curb bumpouts installed at street corners for better visibility
- Crossing beacons installed at crosswalks
- Center median fencing installed to encourage crossing at crosswalks
- Warnings painted at crosswalks reminding pedestrians to check both lanes before walking
IF YOU ARE DRIVING THROUGH TOWN
Slow down, put your phone away, and stay alert! Be aware of the following:
- Crosswalks are flanked with yellow pedestrian signage and flashing yellow lights. Be prepared to stop at flashing yellow lights.
- Families with pets and young children are often walking and biking during the morning and afternoon hours. Be on the lookout for pets or children that may unknowingly enter the roadway.
- Plan for traffic jams. Leave early to avoid the need to rush. Police officers are on constant traffic duty, and the 25 mph is strictly enforced.
- Mopeds and scooters are common forms of transportation here. Keep an eye out for our scooter riders.
IF YOU ARE WALKING THROUGH TOWN
- Cross the street only at marked crosswalks.
- Activate the crossing beacon by pushing the button, then wait. Do not assume that traffic will stop just because the beacon is activated.
- Check both lanes before making your way across the street. One lane of traffic may stop, but the second lane may not. Ensure the bike lane, and both lanes of traffic are clear or at a stop before you cross the street.
- Keep pets on a short leash when near the roadway.
- Hold your child's hand when crossing, and educate children and teenagers about how to cross the street safely in Dewey Beach.
